About Darryl Byrd

Darryl's work is about helping others create and execute the most meaningful and powerful vision for what they aim to achieve personally, through business, or in their community.  Designing the strategies to get them there, and the measures of success to keep themselves honest along the way are also a part of the work.

Darryl Byrd, a board member and past President and Chief Executive Officer of SA2020, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization he co-founded, that serves as the primary catalyst for progress on San Antonio’s community vision. SA2020 does this through three core functions: 1) objectively and transparently measuring community-wide progress, 2) supporting partners, and 3) engaging the public. SA2020 has proven to be a model of public engagement bold visioning and accountability for cities large and small across the nation.

Under Darryl’s leadership, SA2020 built a one-of-a-kind web system – SA2020.org - designed and developed in San Antonio, which includes a real-time data dashboard showing up-to-date progress towards our SA2020 goals. The website also serves as the portal through which thousands of citizens directly connect to nonprofit organizations and collaborating groups working to move the needle on the San Antonio community’s shared goals.

Each year, SA2020 independently releases a comprehensive Progress Report to provide a snapshot of the current status of 2020 goal achievement. The results guide responsive strategies, validate successful strategies, build collaborations, pinpoint areas needing additional financial investment, stimulate and drive thoughtful public policy making.

Prior to SA2020, Darryl served as CEO and Managing Director of Pearl Brewery, LLC, where he led an extraordinary team of professionals on the creation, articulation, and execution of the bold vision and master plan for the 22 acre Historic Pearl Brewery, located on the banks of the San Antonio River.  Today, Pearl is among the strongest models of mixed-use urban redevelopment and adaptive reuse efforts in the nation.

Darryl received his Master’s Degree in City and Regional Planning from Clemson University and his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Hampton University. A devoted community servant, Darryl is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners, a former chairman of the City Planning Commission, and a former Co-Chairman of Leadership San Antonio. He is a member of the Emerging Leaders Council of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, and a board member of the San Antonio Area Foundation and the University of Texas at San Antonio’s Development Board.
